Dossenhütte
A hut tour up the Dossenweg from Rosenlaui — 1350 metres of climbing on ladders and cables, and a front-row seat above the Rosenlaui glacier.
Up the Dossenweg to the balcony
The Dossenhütte clings to a rocky spur at 2663 metres between the Urbachsattel and the Dossenhorn, and getting there is one of the more serious hut approaches in the Bernese Oberland. From Rosenlaui the path starts gently, in the shade past the glacier gorge, and then becomes the Dossenweg proper: 1350 metres of climbing in one push, blue-white waymarked, with cables, cut steps and two ladders on the steepest rises.
It turns serious above the Rosenlaui bivouac at 2068 metres. The remaining 600 metres stay consistently at T4, and in places feel closer to T4+ — not hard in a climbing sense, but exposed enough that concentration and dry rock both matter. Allow around four hours for the ascent.
The reward is waiting at the top. The terrace looks straight into the shattered icefall of the Rosenlaui glacier, with the Wellhorn, the Wetterhorn and the limestone towers of the Engelhörner opposite. For a glacier panorama you reach without rope and crampons, that’s hard to beat.
The tour is at its best as a two-day traverse: rather than reversing the ladders, day two crosses the Urbachsattel and drops into the Urbachtal and on to Innertkirchen. At T3+ that side is far tamer, but long — over 2000 metres of descent take some absorbing.
Tip: ask the warden about conditions before you book. Into early summer a snowfield sits below the secured section, and it shifts the day from “demanding” to “dicey”.
