A hut tour is not a stack of day hikes — it’s one continuous effort where everything you carry, you carry up every climb. The discipline is ruthless: if you won’t use it every day, it stays home.

A few principles:

  • Huts feed you. Half board (dinner + breakfast) is the norm. You don’t need a stove, pot, or three days of food — just trail snacks and lunch between huts. This is what keeps the pack light.
  • One set worn, one set drying. Two of socks and base layers, no more. Wash the worn set at the hut, clip it to the pack to dry the next day.
  • A liner, not a sleeping bag. Almost every staffed hut provides blankets or duvets and requires a personal liner for hygiene. Confirm when you book.
  • Cash and your alpine club card. Many huts don’t take cards, and membership often cuts the overnight fee significantly. Carry the booking confirmation too — beds are not guaranteed without it.
  • Earplugs are not optional. Shared dormitories, early starts, and at least one person who snores like a diesel engine. Sleep is part of your safety margin.
