Biwak am Grassen
A demanding, steep climb to the lonely Grassen bivouac beneath the Titlis south-east edge.
High romance below the Titlis
The Grassen bivouac stands alone beneath the imposing Titlis south-east edge, at the foot of the Wenden glacier. There’s neither a hut warden nor running water — and that’s exactly what makes a visit worth it. Over a glass of wine and some home-cooked porcini risotto, it’s a wonderful place to sit out the evening.
The long ascent from Engelberg is wild and beautiful. The upper part of the blue-and-white trail is a little exposed but well equipped with cables; the easy scrambling keeps the climb entertaining throughout. Cooking facilities, firewood and red wine are all on hand.
Tip: for anyone after something out of the ordinary — a legendary spot for a night in the mountains.
On my list but not yet walked myself — a personal report will follow.
