Walenpfad
A great classic: the panorama trail from the Brunnihütte around the Walenstock to the Bannalp, with a constant drop-away view.
A great classic around the Walenstock
The Walenpfad is called one of the most beautiful high-altitude trails in Switzerland in many descriptions — and for good reason. It always offers the best views into the Engelberg valley and winds its way around the Walenstock. From Engelberg take the train to Ristis and the chairlift to the Brunnihütte, then follow the panorama path leisurely to the Walegg.
Shortly after the Walegg the path becomes a bit more exposed, and you look straight down onto the refreshing Bannalpsee. Passing the Alp Oberfeld — worth tasting a local product if it’s open — the trail leads to the lake and up to the Bannalp mountain station, with railway and post bus back down.
Tip: it works in both directions, and is especially lovely in autumn.
On my list but not yet walked myself — a personal report will follow.
