Schattenwand
Two multi-pitch routes above Unterwasser in the Obertoggenburg: «Uusverchauf» and «Via Anne Aylin», each four pitches at 5b on well-bolted limestone. An autumn line.
Limestone high above the Obertoggenburg
The Schattenwand sits above Unterwasser in the Obertoggenburg. Two multi-pitch routes make for a good climbing day: «Uusverchauf» and «Via Anne Aylin», each 200 m over four pitches at grade 5b. Both are well bolted and go on a 50 m rope with ten quickdraws, classic sport multi-pitches without a rack to haul.
The approach from Unterwasser takes about two hours on foot. Follow the trails up from the train station until the wall appears out of the forest.
Tip: the name says it – the wall sits mostly in shade. That makes it an autumn line, when the sun drops low, the air turns crisp, and the Toggenburg meadows shift colour. Climbing both routes in a day is well within reach for a pair.
