A family tour above Lake Urnersee, with a small cable car ride, a barbecue spot at the viewpoint, and a cool swim in the lake at the end.

Family-friendly above Lake Urnersee

A lovely little classic above the Urnersee: the small family-run cable car from Bolzbach carries you up, and from there the trail climbs through shady forest and open alpine pastures toward the summit. Not too long, but plenty going on: forest, panorama, a barbecue spot, and a swim to finish.

Just below the summit lies the Wanggrat barbecue spot: benches at the viewpoint, a big grill, and firewood available for a small fee in the honesty box next to it. From up here the view sweeps across the whole Reuss delta and over to the Uri and Glarus Alps. From there it is a short walk to the small summit of the Schartehöreli, followed by a long descent through forest and pasture back down to the lake. Along the way, peaceful Angus cattle may share the trail with you.

Down at the shore there is space for a swim. The water is clear and cool, and on the far side of the lake sheer cliffs drop straight into the water. If you prefer, you can take the passenger boat across the Urnersee instead of the train or bus, and turn the return into a small lake cruise.

For families it is especially rewarding: lots to discover in the forest, curious cattle by the path, the big grill at the top, and a swim in the lake to close the day. The cable car ride at the start is a small adventure in itself.

Tip: The little cable car from Bolzbach is family-run, so call ahead and ask whether someone is there to operate it. The ride costs just 5 CHF and is worth it on its own.
