A short, accessible spring summit above the Rhine valley — exactly the kind of thing you want for an early-season day when the higher peaks are still buried in snow. Easy enough to manage in around 3.5 hours, with a proper summit feel at the top despite the modest numbers.
Tip: the “ridge” section over the Heidenchopf isn’t as exciting as the map suggests. Going up via Mattheid would probably be just as nice, and a bit more direct — so if you’re routing this from scratch, that’s the variant I’d pick.
How it went for me
I did it with Anna, going up from Mäls via the Heidenchopf — a sunny spring day, brown meadows, still-snowy peaks in the background, and a proper summit feel up top despite the modest climb. Honestly the ridge impressed us a little less than we’d hoped, but as an early-season opener, while the big mountains are still off-limits, it was exactly the right outing.
