A sporty hike up the Niederbauen Chulm high above Lake Lucerne — a scenic grassy summit with wide views of the central Swiss mountains.
Many metres above Lake Uri
The Niederbauen Chulm is a grassy summit, and grassy summits are easy to underestimate. Anyone who sets off from the valley floor instead of riding the cable car up has about 1600 metres of ascent ahead — first through shady forest over stream bridges, then across flowering alpine pastures with cows, and finally along the open ridge to the summit.
The reward is one of the finest views down anywhere in central Switzerland: Lake Uri lies turquoise and narrow almost directly below you, and beyond it the Uri Alps rise in tiers to the snow-covered peaks in the distance.
Tip: The Berggasthaus Niederbauen regularly hosts a candlelight dinner, where you can watch the sunset from the terrace — the cable-car ride back down afterwards included.
