Matthorn / Brotmessergrat

A ridge climb along the Brotmessergrat to the Matthorn near the Pilatus — airy multi-pitch in the Lucerne Prealps.

Over the Brotmessergrat to the Matthorn

The Brotmessergrat runs as a narrow rock edge to the Matthorn in the Pilatus range. From the camp near Lütholdsmatt you go over Fräkmünt to the start and then along the ridge (grade-3 climbing) to the Matthorn and across to the Chirchsteine. A short, fine autumn tour with plenty of rock under the hands.

Tip: Ideal as the last climb before winter sets in — on a warm October weekend the ridge can still be enjoyed in a T-shirt. The camp near Lütholdsmatt is easy to reach by car.

How it went for me

It was the last weekend before the snow, gloriously warm — we could actually scramble in T-shirts. We drove up in a rental car and soaked up one of those golden autumn days on the rock.
