Hahnen

Engelberg's landmark: a demanding, exposed alpine tour up the Hahnen with a stunning view of the village.

Engelberg’s landmark

As soon as you arrive in Engelberg, this mountain leaps into view: the Hahnen rises far above the village and is its landmark — a destination for many alpine hikers. The upper part of the tour is demanding and exposed; it shouldn’t be underestimated and can be secured with a rope if needed. In the wet it’s tricky because of the slippery grass.

If you feel at home in this alpine terrain, though, this hike with its view of the village is a real treat.

Tip: only in settled, dry weather — and with sure feet, a head for heights and stamina for 1600 metres of climbing.

On my list but not yet walked myself — a personal report will follow.
