Grassen Südwand
A classic rock alpine route on the south face of the Grassen, starting from the Sustlihütte across glacier and bergschrund: ZS-, 3b, at its best in early summer.
Route: From the Sustlihütte across the glacier into the south face of the Grassen. ZS-, 3b.
Approach to the Sustlihütte
Head up to the Sustlihütte the day before and spend the night there, so you can set off early on summit day.
Up the Grassen
From the Sustlihütte, about 4–5 h and roughly 800 m of ascent across the glacier and over the bergschrund into the climbing. The descent back to the hut takes around 2 h 30 with about 700 m down.
Conditions: At its best in early summer (June to July), while the glacier is still snow-covered and the bergschrund has not opened up. From late July on, conditions can get considerably rougher. Best to call the hut for current conditions.
