Gonzen
A short, easy ridge with an excellent prelude: the tiny Palfries cable car ride over a waterfall is half the experience.
The cable car makes the day
The walk up to the Gonzen scores on the panorama alone. The hike itself is genuinely modest — about 7 km and 250 m of ascent — but the tiny Palfries cable car, which climbs past a waterfall, is a spectacle in its own right. If you’re doing this with anyone who normally finds the journey to a hike boring, the lift solves that for free.
From the top station at Palfries it’s a relaxed walk over to the Gonzen. Easy terrain, good ridge views, the kind of half-day where you can have a long lunch and still have time for a coffee afterwards (at the Berghaus Palfries).
Tip: if you’re going on a sunny weekend, it’s best to buy the up-and-down tickets for the Palfries cable car online before the tour. The afternoon and evening descents are otherwise often fully booked.
