Gonzen

A short, easy ridge with an excellent prelude: the tiny Palfries cable car ride over a waterfall is half the experience.

The cable car makes the day

The walking part of this one is genuinely modest — about 7 km and 250 m up — but the way you get to the start is where it earns its place on the list. You take the tiny Palfries cable car, which climbs past a waterfall and is honestly more dramatic than half the actual hikes I’ve done. If you’re doing this with anyone who normally finds the approach to a trailhead boring, the lift solves that for free.

From the top station at Palfries it’s a relaxed walk over to the Gonzen. Easy terrain, good ridge views, the kind of half-day where you can have a long lunch and still be back in time for a coffee.

Tip: a proper write-up follows once I’ve actually done the tour myself.
