A summit with fine print
The Altmann is one of those Alpstein peaks that just looks the part — a sharp ridge slicing across the second wall of the range, with steep drops on both sides that get your attention pretty quickly. The walking is varied the whole way, and the views from the second wall are the kind that make you stop and stare (and then pretend you stopped because you needed water).
There’s one line in the fine print, though: the summit is optional. The final step is a short but seriously demanding T5 passage — short enough to look harmless from below, demanding enough that you want to be honest about conditions and who you’re with before committing. For most of the loop, sure-footedness on the ridge is all you need. Just don’t plan the day as if that key step doesn’t exist.
