Alp d’Anion

An adventurous two-day tour in the Grisons Alps to the remote Alp d'Anion, out in the quiet late autumn.

Late autumn in the Val Calanca

From Grono the tour heads into the quiet Val Calanca, climbing via Cauco and La Motta to the remote Alp d’Anion. The path there is partly waymarked white-blue and secured with chains at the steeper steps. It carries on over the Mottone and the Cot di Saltel across to Braggio — the hamlet linked to the valley only by a little funicular — and finally down to Arvigo.

Tip: A tour for late autumn, when the southern valleys are often still mild — though there can already be snow above the Alp d’Anion. Factor the funicular from Braggio into your timetable.

How it went for me

By the end of October there was already snow above the Alp d’Anion, and the secured sections wanted care. The best bit came right at the end: in Braggio a wonderfully kind local took us along and let us travel on her discounted resident’s ticket — exactly the sort of encounter that makes a tour stick in the memory.
